You will find that in general, motorhote and RV prices in the USA are far cheaper than Australia for secondhand vehicles (and new vehicles as well). For a 3 month trip you may be financially better off renting provided you are able to sell the vehicle quickly before you leave or perhaps have a US based friend or relative sell it for you on your behalf after you leave the country. However its a big maybe since there are lots of things that you need to consider and it can be stressful selling a vehicle under strict time contraints often resulting in taking a heavy loss on the purchase price. Consider what would happen if the vehicle breaks down due to major engine failure, something like this could easily negate any savings you may have made compared to hiring a vehicle not to mention putting a damper on your holiday during the repair period. You'll also have to cover all the additional running costs such as replacement tires, mechanical servicing etc. Keep in mind that depending on where you buy the vehicle, some taxes may apply as well as vehicle registration and insurances. If buying from a dealer you may receive a warranty, however keep in mind that some dealers may require you to return the vehicle to them for repairs, not an ideal situation if you intend to travel outside the state. Certain times of the year will command higher prices for vehicles due to weather. For instance its easier to sell a vehicle for a higher price in Spring or Summer when people are wanting to start their travels compared to Winter or Fall/Autumn. Likewise, you may pick up some great bargains in the colder months.Perhaps consider a buy back service whereby the company that sells you your vehicle promises in writing to buy your vehicle back at the end of your trip (at a reduced price). You will still lose money on it but may find its still cheaper than renting over a long period. Some companies also need drivers to return vehicles from one city to another and often only charge a very small amount for this type of hire, however you are usually restricted in your travel as departure and arrival dates need to be met. +7 Was this answer helpful?
